"fish fish and more fish!" 2009-12-29
By dream factory (Triangulum, M33)
my fish love it. i think it would be good for any breed of fish.
bubblehead goldfish, comets, feeders, oriental, moors.
barbs, mollys, swordtail, guppy, gourami, great white shark.
little fish, big fish, yellow fish, red fish.

but not for red tailed japanese betta fighting fish. they hate this food.

what about piranha? the only way your gonna get this fish food into a piranha is if this food has been fed to one of the piranha's prey. then technically when the victims body disintegrates in the piranah's gastric juices the stomach content shall release the 'aquarium goldfish flake fish food'. But said fish must be small enough so that it can be gulped down whole rather than shred to pieces in their typical feeding frenzy oparandi.

The Importance of Set Up a Fish Quarantine Tank

The quarantine tank plays a crucial role in the marine aquarium hobby simply because there are a percentage of marine aquarium fishes that enter the trade with some form of disease or marine parasite. Most hobbyists will always tell you to quarantine every time you buy a new fish. But the vast majority of hobbyists simply do not quarantine and some end up paying the price for this mistake.

Quarantine tanks should be used by all members of the aquarium hobby when introducing new fish to a tank, but are unfortunately used by less than 5% of all aquarium owners. Every time we bring a new inhabitant into our aquarium we run the risk of introducing disease and parasites. At the same time, new fish will be very stressed from transport and relocation and will be very susceptible to any diseases or parasites present in the new environment. A quarantine tank protects your existing investment while allowing new fish to regain optimum health before their final stressful transition. In our opinion, a quarantine tank is a vital piece of equipment that should be used by all aquarists.

The problem with aquariums is the fact that it is a closed system, unlike the vast oceans that our livestock come from. As such, any parasitic organism, fungus or disease can quickly spread among the livestock like wildfire. This is especially true when dealing with marine ich and marine velvet.
While both parasites have the potential to wreak havoc on our aquariums, marine velvet does it in much quicker fashion. Specimens can perish as quickly as two days. This is because the marine velvet parasitic dinoflagellate tends to attack the gills which can eventually suffocate the fish or damage the gills so extensively that death comes quickly.
So the answer to the unknown organisms that are present on new fish is the quarantine tank. The quarantine tank is where all new fish are kept for a period no shorter than a month. It is where they are observed, treated and taught to accept prepared foods. It is especially handy when a specimen has a marine parasite as some parasite medication contains ingredients (copper) that will surely destroy the biological filter of the main display aquarium along with any invertebrates present.
Some fish stores do practice quarantining on their own but this varies from store to store. Some are trustworthy while others always seem to stock specimens that are suffering from one ailment or another. It is always better to err on the side of caution rather than risk your present livestock.

Oceanic BioCube 14 Aquarium (Misc.)

Oceanic BioCube 14 Aquarium (Misc.) newly tagged "fish tank"
For my first try at having a salt water tank, I figure to buy a small tank. This tank is perfect for a apartment/co-op or for homes with not an abundance of space (for a tank). I created a reef tank complete with live rock, an anemone, clownfish, 3 snails, 5 hermit crabs, a yellow watchman goby, pistol shrimp, fighting conch, polyps, and a sand sifter starfish. On the top of the tank, it comes with a white light and a violet light. When the violet light is on, there is a fan that circulates to prevent the light from heating the tank water.

This tank has the filter built in on the back. I replaced the carbon that the tank came with, with filter pads. In the middle compartment, I took out the bio-balls and replaced it with crushed rock and sand. This keeps the tank filtered and allows the bacteria (good) to flourish. The current is very strong and you can adjust it. The filter/current/air pump is very quiet.

The tank is easy to maintain. This is great for beginners as well as experts who don't have the time to maintain a rather large tank. The downside is that if you plan on buying large fish; this tank is too small.

How to Care Koi Fish in Ponds ?

Koi fish, or Nishikigoi, are the product of several centuries of selective breeding of the common brown Asian carp and the German carp. The first color mutations appeared about 1805.

Koi are available in all colors from the purest white, through yellow, orange, red, near-lavender, blues, greens and coal black, in limitless combinations.

http://img260.imageshack.us/img260/5222/koifish39893453992844.jpg

Most popular in Japan are the Kohaku, a pure white fish with persimmon-red patches arranged in a stepping stone pattern.

In the USA, favorite types run the gamut from the legendary "Big Three" (Kohaku, Taisho Sanke, and Showa Sanke, the last two appreciated for varying proportions of white, black and red) to the eye catching Ogons, metallic fish that look like they have been hammered from gold or platinum.

It comes as no small surprise that most pond owners love to keep Koi fish. Koi fish owners and enthusiasts love to watch them swim, as well as their bright colors. As a owner you must understand even the basic requirements for having healthy fish in your pond.

Just as aquatic fish, requires the correct pond size to give them ample movement. Not to mention the water quality and correct feeding. It's best before buying that you research and obtain information about their special needs and living conditions while raising them.

Quality of Water: Maintaining your ponds water quality is vital. You will need to adjust the water temperature, nutrient amounts, and light conditions as per the season. A good pH range is between the levels of 7-7.5%. This can be accomplished by installing a skimmer and pump system to your pond. This also needs to be done prior to placing your fish in the pond. After placement of the fishi into the pond you will need to continue to monitor the water on a regular basis. Replacement of water in the pond will be about 20-25% every couple of weeks.

Feeding: As a new owner you will need to feed the appropriate amount of food that has been specifically formulated just for them. This food is available in pellet or stick form. Did you know that as your fish grows so does the amount of proteins he needs in his diet? A young Koi needs more protein than an older one. You should also not provide more food than they can consume in a matter of minutes. Any more than that can damage your water chemistry as it will degrade quickly.

Population: When getting ready to buy you will need to remember that when selecting the number of fish per the size of your pond. A fully grown Koi can be raised in a water capacity of about 100-110 gallons. As well, estimate the number of Koi with reference to the total amount of water in your pond. You do not want it to be overcrowded as this can result in poor water quality and environmental conditions.

Disease: If you discover any abnormalities in the water chemistry or in their nutrition, this will cause the fish to become dull and lifeless. In more serious cases they can even become ill due to such things as bacterial infections. If you introduce sick fish or any damaged plant life into the pond this can also cause your fish to become ill. Now how do you check for diseased fish? The best way in which to do this is to check the underside of their stomach. If you happen to find any sick Koi fish then it is best to separate them from the other fish and place them in isolation until they have become disease free and well. You do not want to take the chance of infecting your other Koi fish to disease.

Marine Ich - Marine Aquarium Fish Trade

Marine Ich. Two words that can send shivers down the spine of any marine aquarium hobbyist. These marine parasites are difficult to eradicate in the display tank and they can quickly infect every other marine aquarium fish in the tank within a week.

http://img695.imageshack.us/img695/374/95907mainfull6808991681.jpg
While copper has been the medication of choice when dealing with marine parasites, it is also quite a lethal substance. As such, there are some fish that do not react well to copper treatment. The dwarf angelfish (centropyge) are one species that is quite sensitive to copper treatment, in particular, the flame angelfish.

http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/7452/dscf019768147266816857.jpgIn one report conducted by an American University, over 50 percent of all flame angelfish perished when undergoing copper treatment in controlled conditions. Because copper is essentially stressful to our marine aquarium fish, many companies have been producing remedies that are effective against marine ich minus the stress levels that are commonly associated with copper treatment.

The primary allure of the marine aquarium hobby has to be marine aquarium fish. This is also true with the freshwater aquarium scene where most folks get into the hobby primarily because of the fish. Sure there may be some were interested mainly because of the beauty of corals or planted tanks but they are far from the majority.

As marine aquarium hobbyists, we are spoiled for choice. There are a myriad number of species available in the marine trade to satisfy the vast majority of us. And it you have the money, you can pretty much get what you want including sharks, stingrays and pricey deep water species.

For most of us however, are well satisfied with the available saltwater aquarium fish that are plentiful in the market. In terms of price, rarity has always been major influence on the ultimate price per specimen. Take Amphiprion Ocellaris for example. Named the Ocellaris clownfish, it is the most recognizable member of the clownfish family along with its twin, the percula clownfish.

It is also very abundant in our oceans, which ultimately makes his fish a relatively cheap specimen to purchase. On the other end of the spectrum, we have true rarities such as the Gem Tang and the Peppermint Angelfish. Their price tag runs well into the thousands. In the case of the peppermint angelfish, the last specimen fetched a reported twenty thousand dollars in Japan.

Because demand for marine aquarium fish are always high, there are some that are concerned for the sustainability of the hobby. Having seen hundreds upon hundreds of fish in large holding tanks myself, i would have to agree. Our oceans cannot possibly replace the huge numbers that are collected in time to replenish stocks in time for the next collection.

Thankfully, there is a concerted effort in producing tank raised marine aquarium fish. One such place that focuses exclusively on rearing marine fish is the popular forum, MOFIB.com. However, due to the increased costs associated with tank reared specimens, most do not generate a big enough profit to warrant tank raising.
